There is no guaranteed timeline, and WSIB does not commit to a fixed payment date. Speed mostly depends on how quickly the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) receives complete information and how clear-cut your claim is.
Three reports usually need to arrive before anyone decides anything: your Form 6, your employer’s Form 7, and your health professional’s Form 8. Once all three are in, straightforward claims are often decided within about two weeks. Claims involving disputes, pre-existing conditions, chronic mental stress, or occupational disease routinely take longer because WSIB requests more evidence.
When a claim is approved:
- Your first payment is normally retroactive, covering lost wages from the day after your injury up to the approval date. Your employer is responsible for your wages on the day of the injury itself.
- Ongoing Loss of Earnings (LOE) benefits are typically paid every two weeks.
- Direct deposit is the fastest way to get paid. Cheques add mailing time.
A few habits help keep money moving:
- Report the injury to your employer immediately and get medical care the same day if you can.
- Complete your Form 6 fully and describe exactly how the injury happened. Vague descriptions trigger follow-up questions.
- Confirm your health professional actually sent the Form 8.
- Respond quickly to any WSIB request and keep copies of everything you send.
- Sign up for direct deposit through WSIB’s online services.
If weeks pass with no decision, call WSIB and ask what is outstanding. Silence usually means a report is missing, not that your claim is progressing.
A denial, reduction, or cutoff is not the end of the process: you have appeal rights with strict deadlines. WorkAid provides paralegal representation for WSIB appeals across Ontario. Call 1-844-907-5243 if your money is stalled and you want a clear read on why.
